Baked cabbage with pork leg and smoked kaiser

Categories:  Main Courses / Pork Recipes / Roumanian Recipes /

Baked cabbage with pork meat is a traditional Romanian dish, very tasty and appreciated. This recipe is full of calories this recipe and ideal in the winter when you cand find sauerkraut (recipe can be made with raw cabbage, in other seasons).
Peppers and polenta (made with butter) work perfectly with this traditional dish.

Ingredients:
-1 kg of chopped pickled cabbage
-1 kg of pork leg
-250 grams of ribs or smoked kaiser
-mashed tomatoes
-thyme
-bay
- pepper berries or ground pepper
-sunflower oil

Wash meat and cut it into cubes. Then fry it in olive oil.

Turn it until golden brown on each side.

Add pepper and sweet paprika, fry the meat for another 3 minutes (the meat doesn’t have to be completely cooked because you will bake it for another 15-20 minutes).
Keep meat covered and warm until cabbage is baked.

Chop sauerkrau and drain it well. Squeeze cabbage in your fist (to remain as dry as possible) and then place it intro the greased tray. After you’ve placed all the cabbage into the tray, sprinkle pepper berries, thyme and bay leaves.

Then sprinkle paprika and pepper. Bake in oven until cabbage gets a little golden brown.
Then add the already cooked meat with sauce and continue baking at 180 degrees..

After 10 minutes add tomatoes, stir well and put the tray back in the oven.

Then fry the kaiser until gets golden brown.

Add fried kaiser on top of the baked cabbage.

Leave it in the oven for another 5 minutes to brown a little more.

Serve hot.

Traditionally served with polenta and one hot pepper (accelerates digestion).

Enjoy!
